Overview

The Journey

A family safari succeeds on rhythm: drives short enough to hold attention, camps with pools and space to run, days that mix wildlife with things to do. This itinerary is built on years of travelling with families — including our own.

It opens gently with a walking-and-canoeing day in Arusha National Park, moves through Tarangire’s guaranteed elephants, and gives the Serengeti two full days with picnic lunches in the wild. A Maasai community visit adds the human story children remember longest, and the crater delivers the grand finale.

The private vehicle changes everything with kids: bathroom stops on demand, snack schedules, early returns on tired days, and a guide who becomes the trip’s hero — quiz-master, tracker and walking wildlife encyclopedia.

Lodges are chosen for family rooms, pools and safe grounds. We run this route in midrange or luxury, and we are honest about which lodges genuinely welcome children versus merely tolerating them.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival & Soft Landing

Arusha
+

Meet your guide at Kilimanjaro and settle into a family lodge with gardens and a pool. Early dinner, early night — jet lag is real and tomorrow is active.

Day 2

Walk & Paddle — Arusha NP

Arusha National Park
+

A ranger-guided walking safari among giraffe — being on foot thrills children in a way vehicles never do — then a gentle canoe on the Momella Lakes past hippos and flamingos. Colobus monkeys perform overhead all day.

Day 3

Tarangire — Elephant Guarantee

Tarangire National Park
+

Nothing hooks a young safari-goer like a hundred elephants. Tarangire delivers them against a storybook baobab backdrop, with mongooses, hornbills and a river full of activity between the giants.

Day 4

Maasai Morning & the Highlands

Karatu
+

Visit a Maasai community we have known for years — homes, cattle, spear-throwing lessons and the jumping dance, with plenty of time for questions in both directions. Afternoon at a Karatu farm lodge with room to run.

Day 5

Into the Serengeti

Central Serengeti
+

Over the crater highlands and onto the plains — cue the Lion King references, all of them accurate. Game viewing en route to camp, checklist in hand.

Day 6

Serengeti — The Full Day

Central Serengeti
+

Big cats, bush picnic, and your guide’s full repertoire of tracks, dung facts and bird calls. We pace the day around your crew — an afternoon pool break at camp is always on the table.

Day 7

To the Crater Rim

Ngorongoro Conservation Area
+

A final Serengeti morning, then the drive up to the crater rim with a stop at Olduvai Gorge — a human-origins story that lands surprisingly well with kids standing where it happened.

Day 8

Crater Finale & Departure

Ngorongoro Crater
+

Descend into the caldera for the Big Five closing ceremony — then back to Arusha, trading final animal counts all the way, for your evening flight home.
