Overview

The Journey

If you have never been on safari, this is the itinerary we recommend first — and the one we would book for our own friends. It links northern Tanzania’s three heavyweight parks in a logical loop from Arusha, with driving times that leave room to actually watch the animals you came for.

The route builds deliberately. Tarangire opens the trip with elephants and baobabs at close range; the Serengeti follows with two nights among the plains and their predators; Ngorongoro closes the show with the most concentrated game-viewing day in Africa.

Accommodation is hand-picked midrange — comfortable lodges and tented camps in genuinely good locations, chosen for character and position rather than chandeliers. Your vehicle and guide are private throughout, so every day runs at your pace.

This safari runs well in every season; we adjust which corner of the Serengeti you sleep in to match where the wildlife — and in migration months, the herds — will be.

Day by Day

Itinerary

Day 1

Arusha to Tarangire — Land of Giants

Tarangire National Park
+

Your guide collects you in Arusha after breakfast for the two-hour drive to Tarangire. An afternoon game drive follows the river, where elephant herds gather beneath baobabs older than empires. Sundowners at camp as the park turns gold.

Day 2

Tarangire to the Serengeti Plains

Central Serengeti
+

A morning game drive out of Tarangire, then the scenic climb through the Ngorongoro highlands and down onto the endless plains. You arrive in the Serengeti by late afternoon — game viewing begins the moment you cross the gate.

Day 3

Full Day in the Serengeti

Central Serengeti · Seronera Valley
+

Dawn to dusk among the highest predator concentrations in Africa. The Seronera Valley delivers lion, leopard and cheetah year-round; your guide reads the grass, the vultures and the radio to keep you in the right place. Picnic lunch in the bush.

Day 4

Serengeti to the Crater Rim

Ngorongoro Conservation Area
+

A final Serengeti morning drive, then east past Olduvai Gorge — where humankind’s oldest footprints were found — to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. Evening at the rim’s edge, watching clouds pour into the caldera below.

Day 5

Ngorongoro Crater & Return to Arusha

Ngorongoro Crater
+

Descend 600 metres at first light into the world’s largest intact caldera. Lion, elephant, buffalo and — with luck — black rhino share the crater floor. After a picnic by the hippo pool, ascend and drive back to Arusha for your onward flight.
