Tanzania's entry requirements are straightforward once laid out plainly. Here is what you need, based on the official government eVisa guidelines — though rules can change, so verify against the official portal (visa.immigration.go.tz) close to travel.
The Tanzania eVisa
Most visitors need a visa, and the smoothest route is applying online before travel through the official eVisa portal. The application asks for:
- Your passport bio-data page (passport valid at least 6 months beyond arrival, with blank pages)
- A passport-style photograph
- A return or onward ticket
- The completed online application form
- Payment of the visa fee by card
Processing typically takes up to ten working days, so apply at least two to three weeks before departure. You receive an approval letter by email — print it and carry it with your passport.
Visa fees
- Ordinary (single-entry) tourist visa: USD 50
- US passport holders visiting for tourism are required to apply for a multiple-entry visa: USD 100
Visas on arrival are available at major entry points for many nationalities, but queues can be long after an overnight flight — the eVisa spares you that.
Zanzibar specifics
Zanzibar is part of Tanzania, so your Tanzanian visa covers it. Note that Zanzibar requires mandatory travel insurance for visitors, purchasable online before arrival, and checks proof of it at entry.
Health requirements
- Yellow fever certificate: required only if you arrive from (or transit more than 12 hours through) a yellow-fever-endemic country
- Malaria: prophylaxis is recommended for all safari areas — consult a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure
- Routine vaccinations (hepatitis A, typhoid, tetanus) are commonly advised
