On the green lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, the village of Materuni farms some of Tanzania’s finest arabica in the shade of banana groves. This day trip pairs an easy, beautiful hike with the best coffee experience in the country.
The walk climbs gently through farmland and forest to Materuni Falls, where a 70-metre ribbon of glacier-fed water drops into a swimmable pool — cold, clear and irresistible after the hike.
Back in the village, Chagga hosts walk you through coffee the traditional way: picking, pulping, sun-drying, hand-roasting over the fire, pounding to song, and finally drinking — a cup you made yourself, a few metres from the tree it grew on.
